Medication Disposal

In April 2010 As Our Parents Age posted  information about how to dispose of medications that are expired or no longer used. I researched the topic because there were many medications in our kitchen cabinet, left after my husband’s mother died, and we needed to know how to get rid of them in a way that was environmentally safe.

On September 25, 2010, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is holding a nationwide collection, National Take Back Initiative, sponsoring sites where people can bring in old medications, especially but not limited to expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances. Learn more about the activities associated with this day. Search for a disposal location near your home.  Read the press release about the activity.

Read more about the proper disposal of old and unused medications at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
